- According to a report by PharmaTimes, the Department of Health has informed UK manufacturers of medicines that the current pricing deal that sets the cost of prescription drugs to the National Health Service is being scrapped at the end of the summer.
The Department of Health has sent out a letter serving a 6-month notice stating that the current Pharmaceutical Price Regulation Scheme (PPRS) will be replaced on the 1st of September 2008.
The move was prompted by an Office of Fair Trading report, which claimed that the NHS could save up to £500 million a year by choosing the cheapest alternative on a range of popular medicines, and recommended that reforming the PPRS would help deliver greater benefit to patients.
