Unlike saline implants, which are usually inserted empty, silicone implants are pre-filled. The surgeon will insert the implant into the pocket and visually inspect your breasts to ensure that they are symmetric. The incisions will be closed using sutures in the breast tissue. Sutures, skin adhesive or surgical tape may be used to close the skin. The scars from the incisions will fade slowly over several months, but it may take up to a year for them to refine completely. As with any surgery, you will most likely experience some pain and swelling after surgery. The majority of the swelling will likely subside within a few days. Your physician may place you in a special bra or compression garment to aid in the healing process. Compression garments provide support and comfort, minimize swelling, and help to maintain the position of the implants. You will most likely be able to return to work within three to seven days after your procedure. However, it is important that you avoid any strenuous activity and lifting for approximately three to four weeks. Doing so may delay healing and could damage the implants. You will be able to notice the final results from your procedure once the implants have settled and the swelling has subsided completely.

- Researchers from the London School of Pharmacy conducted semi-structured interviews with general medical in- and out- patients to identify their medicine information needs and explore differences in these needs between different disease groups. The main outcome measures were patients’ responses to standardised data-collection tools, including the Extent of Information Desired scale (EID) which identified their information needs. The following data from interviews with 1717 patients were reported:
• Scores on the EID correlated with age and socio-demographic variables.
• The extent of information desired positively correlated with socio-economic status (p<0.001).
• The extent of information desired negatively correlated with the patient’s age (p<0.001), implying that medicine-information desires decreases with age.
• Statistically significant differences were found in the extent of information desired between disease categories, which remained significant when controlling for age (p<0.001).
• Patients with endocrine and diabetes diagnoses expressed high desires for information, whereas patients with cardiovascular and respiratory diagnoses expressed low desires for information.
The researchers conclude from these findings that “both the disease and the age of patient are principal influences on desires for medicine information….it will be important for healthcare professionals to identify and understand that patients with different diseases have different desires for information about their disease and their drugs which may influence the way they take their medicines and subsequently the ways we manage their long-term disease.”
