Implant Removal Procedure

According to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery:
235,000 women had breast augmentation surgery in 2003;
More than 40,000 (1 every 6) had breast implant removal surgeries.

This procedure, known as explantation, can be done to decrease the size or to make room for new implants.


Reasons for Breast Implant Removal
The three most common reasons for breast implant removal are:
• Change of size and shape;
• Implant leakage or rupture; and
• Capsular contracture.

Sometimes, breast implant removal is necessary to treat problems that occur with the implants.

Possible problems with implants
• Deflation or rupture
• Shifting
• Wrinkling
• Sagging
• Asymmetry

Problems due to the body's reaction to the implants
• Bleeding
• Infection
• Diagnosis of breast cancer
• Formation of scar tissue that tightens around the implant (capsular contracture)
• Necrosis, or the formation of dead tissue around the implant, which may prevent wound healing
• Calcium deposits


The procedure
Breast implant removal is done under either general anesthesia or local anesthesia combined with sedation.
The procedure usually takes 30 minutes to an hour and takes place in an outpatient surgical center.
The surgeon removes the implant by either:
• Operating through an incision under the breast; or
• Incision through the nipple.
If the implant is made of saline, doctors may choose to deflate it first to facilitate removal.

Average costs
Breast implant removal usually costs between $1,000 and $4,000.

Recovery
Initial recovery from breast implant removal surgery is usually quick, with many patients returning to everyday activity within a few days, and full activity within two to three weeks.
Full recovery often takes a few months. For the first few days after breast implant removal, there may be mild discomfort, swelling and bruising.

Complications
Some uncommon (though possible) complications include:
• Loss of nipple sensation;
• Scarring;
• Bleeding; and
• Loose skin.

Removal of Large Breast Implants
Occasionally, women who opt for removal of large breast implants, especially those that are inserted on top of the muscle and under the breast glands, are left with major cosmetic deformity in their breasts if they opt to not replace the breast implants or have further cosmetic surgery.


Tissue atrophy and chest wall deformity often result from breast implant removal. Breasts may also be smaller than they were before the implants because of hormone changes or weight loss. Sagging may also become more apparent after breast implant removal.

Emotional Effects
Some women suffer from psychological distress after breast implant removal.
It is normal to feel some sadness.

  • Argentina History

    Following independence from Spain in 1816, Argentina experienced periods of internal political conflict between conservatives and liberals. In the first decade of the 20th century, Argentina became the richest nation in Latin America, its wealth symbolized by the opulence of its capital city.

    European immigrants flowed into Argentina, particularly from Italy; by 1914 nearly 6 million people had come to the country.

    After World War II, a long period of Peronist rule in subsequent governments was followed by a military junta that took power in 1976.

    Democracy returned in 1983 after the abortive attempt to wrest the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) from United Kingdom sovereignity.

    A painful economic collapse at the turn of the 21st century devalued the Argentine peso by a factor of three and ushered in a series of weak, short-lived governments along with social and economic instability. As of 2006, the country has stabilized under President Nestor Kirchner, and the economy has begun to recover.


  • Argentina Time

    Argentinians generally take a very relaxed attitude towards time. This can be unsettling to visitors from North America and non-Latin parts of Europe where punctuality is highly valued. You should expect that your Argentine contacts will be at least 10 to 15 minutes late for any appointment, even to a business meeting. Tardiness of 30 to 45 minutes is not unusual. This is considered normal in Argentina and does not signify any lack of respect for the relationship.

    If you are invited to a dinner or party at, say, 9 PM. It does not mean that you should be present at 9 PM, but instead that you should not arrive before 9 PM. You'll be welcomed anytime afterwards. Arriving to a party 2-3 hours late is normally OK and sometimes expected. This is normally difficult to understand for Northern hemispherians.

    This attitude extends to any scheduled activity in Argentina. Plays, concerts usually get going around half an hour after their scheduled times. Long distance buses usually leave on time. Short-distance public transportation like city buses and the subway do not even bother with time estimates; they arrive when they arrive. Factor these elements into your calculations of how long things will take.

    Unannounced bus or train departures ahead of the schedule are not uncommon, especially in big cities. This is normally not a problem, as in general no one will expect you to be on time anyway.

  • This Blog provides a quick and succinct commentary on a recent subgroup analysis of patients with metabolic syndrome in the ALLHAT study, which found that the incidence of heart failure was higher in patients initially treated with amlodipine and lisinopril (and doxazosin) than in those initially treated with a diuretic. These findings were particularly apparent in black patients. The Blog notes that the NICE guideline did not recommend diuretics as the first-line treatment for hypertension ahead of calcium channel blockers for those aged 55 years or black (of any age) because of the supposition that diuretics were associated with a higher incidence of developing of diabetes. However, the guideline did not specifically consider patients with metabolic syndrome or diabetes. It adds that there is no convincing evidence to support the view that use of diuretics in people with these conditions puts them at any greater cardiovascular risk than those treated with ACE inhibitors or calcium channel blockers. It concludes “this analysis adds weight to the positioning of thiazide diuretics as first-line antihypertensive in the vast majority of patients with hypertension. This study fails to support the use of calcium channel blockers, ACE inhibitors (or alpha-blockers) ahead of diuretics in patients with metabolic syndrome. Clinicians should consider their current practice in comparison with the recommendations made by NICE.”
