Implant Removal Procedure

According to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery:
235,000 women had breast augmentation surgery in 2003;
More than 40,000 (1 every 6) had breast implant removal surgeries.

This procedure, known as explantation, can be done to decrease the size or to make room for new implants.


Reasons for Breast Implant Removal
The three most common reasons for breast implant removal are:
• Change of size and shape;
• Implant leakage or rupture; and
• Capsular contracture.

Sometimes, breast implant removal is necessary to treat problems that occur with the implants.

Possible problems with implants
• Deflation or rupture
• Shifting
• Wrinkling
• Sagging
• Asymmetry

Problems due to the body's reaction to the implants
• Bleeding
• Infection
• Diagnosis of breast cancer
• Formation of scar tissue that tightens around the implant (capsular contracture)
• Necrosis, or the formation of dead tissue around the implant, which may prevent wound healing
• Calcium deposits


The procedure
Breast implant removal is done under either general anesthesia or local anesthesia combined with sedation.
The procedure usually takes 30 minutes to an hour and takes place in an outpatient surgical center.
The surgeon removes the implant by either:
• Operating through an incision under the breast; or
• Incision through the nipple.
If the implant is made of saline, doctors may choose to deflate it first to facilitate removal.

Average costs
Breast implant removal usually costs between $1,000 and $4,000.

Recovery
Initial recovery from breast implant removal surgery is usually quick, with many patients returning to everyday activity within a few days, and full activity within two to three weeks.
Full recovery often takes a few months. For the first few days after breast implant removal, there may be mild discomfort, swelling and bruising.

Complications
Some uncommon (though possible) complications include:
• Loss of nipple sensation;
• Scarring;
• Bleeding; and
• Loose skin.

Removal of Large Breast Implants
Occasionally, women who opt for removal of large breast implants, especially those that are inserted on top of the muscle and under the breast glands, are left with major cosmetic deformity in their breasts if they opt to not replace the breast implants or have further cosmetic surgery.


Tissue atrophy and chest wall deformity often result from breast implant removal. Breasts may also be smaller than they were before the implants because of hormone changes or weight loss. Sagging may also become more apparent after breast implant removal.

Emotional Effects
Some women suffer from psychological distress after breast implant removal.
It is normal to feel some sadness.


If psychological symptoms last a reasonable amount of time after breast implant removal, the patient should seek professional help.

  • Argentina Time

    Argentinians generally take a very relaxed attitude towards time. This can be unsettling to visitors from North America and non-Latin parts of Europe where punctuality is highly valued. You should expect that your Argentine contacts will be at least 10 to 15 minutes late for any appointment, even to a business meeting. Tardiness of 30 to 45 minutes is not unusual. This is considered normal in Argentina and does not signify any lack of respect for the relationship.

    If you are invited to a dinner or party at, say, 9 PM. It does not mean that you should be present at 9 PM, but instead that you should not arrive before 9 PM. You'll be welcomed anytime afterwards. Arriving to a party 2-3 hours late is normally OK and sometimes expected. This is normally difficult to understand for Northern hemispherians.

    This attitude extends to any scheduled activity in Argentina. Plays, concerts usually get going around half an hour after their scheduled times. Long distance buses usually leave on time. Short-distance public transportation like city buses and the subway do not even bother with time estimates; they arrive when they arrive. Factor these elements into your calculations of how long things will take.

    Unannounced bus or train departures ahead of the schedule are not uncommon, especially in big cities. This is normally not a problem, as in general no one will expect you to be on time anyway.


  • Argentina Electricity

    Argentine electricity is officially 220V 50Hz, with slanted plugs similar to those used in Australia. Adapters and transformers for European and North American equipment are readily available.

    The best way to use imported electrical equipment in Argentina is to purchase an adapter once there. These are available in the Florida shopping area in Buenos Aires for around US$2, or less in hardware stores outside the city center. Buildings use a mix of European and Australian plug fittings. However, the live and neutral pins in the Australian fittings are reversed so as to prevent cheap imports into Australia. Therefore an Australian adapter may be incompatible.

    Many sockets have no earth pin. Laptop adapters should have little problem with this for short term use.

    Argentina's outlets are their own standard, the IRAM-2073, which are physically identical to the Australian AS-3112 standard (two blades in a V-shape, with or without a third blade for ground).

  • Rasilez(R) (aliskiren), the first-in-class direct renin inhibitor, has shown clinically meaningful reductions in left ventricular hypertrophy, a proven predictor of heart disease, that are comparable to those seen with the current standard-of-care treatment[1]. Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), or abnormal thickening of the heart muscle, often results from high blood pressure[2].
  • According to E-Health Insider, NHS Direct has launched a new text messaging service that allows users to obtain details of local health facilities, including their nearest GP, dentist, pharmacy, optician, walk-in centre, A&E or hospital in England. Users can get this information by texting the name of the service required, followed by a postcode, to 61121; they will receive a text message with details of the closest services to that postcode, including the service name, address and telephone number plus the distance from the postcode. NHS Direct’s commercial director said that the service will initially be launched as a pilot through their Freeview digital TV service (channel 108) before being promoted to a wider audience. Users are charged their standard rate for texts sent to the service and NHS Direct covers the cost of the replies.
