The right result? is the Audit Commission’s report on the NHS's experience with Payment by Results (PbR) since it was introduced. The report also considers the future direction of PbR and the challenges to the NHS over the period to 2010/11, based on the Department of Health's recent consultation. The overall conclusion is that “PbR has been embedded across the NHS. Most hospitals have improved their financial management and now have a better understanding of how much it costs them to treat patients. The fear that patient care would suffer because hospitals would be tempted to cut costs at the expense of quality has not materialised.”
