Note for Americans: Greyhound Canada is much nicer than Greyhound USA; there are movie services, seats are more comfortable, and your fellow passengers are generally quite interesting people from very differing backgrounds. It's actually quite enjoyable.

- "Challenges and Promise of Cell-Based Therapies" is a one-day symposium to explore promising research in regenerative medicine using stem cells. The opening plenary session will feature an overview of hematopoietic stem cell therapy. This will be followed by four plenary sessions that will highlight cell-based therapies for the treatment of neurological, cardiac, musculoskeletal, and metabolic diseases and disorders. It will close with a presentation on induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and the issues that need to be addressed to enable their potential use in cell-based therapies.
- BBC Health News reports that government plans to extend health screening (see link to previous NeLM news item) could see an extra 4 million people receiving statins. The new plans will affect everyone in England aged 40 to 74 and will include checks for heart disease. This could potentially increase the use of statins, which will be a treatment option. However, critics have said that this move is likely to have little health impact and the majority of people taking statins will not gain any benefit.
Professor Roger Boyle, the government's National Director for Heart Disease in England, told the Investigation on Radio 4 (broadcast on Thursday April 3rd at 8pm) the plan to offer mass screening would considerably alter the number of people taking statins. He said: "The number could at least double from roughly 3 million at the moment taking statin drugs to certainly 6 or 7 million people." According to the BBC news report most of these new patients will not have a history of heart disease and will be taking statins as primary prevention to avoid heart attacks. Professor Boyle admitted to the Investigation programme that clinical studies have shown 99% of this group will gain no benefit from taking the drug. However, he said the policy would still mean tens of thousands of people would avoid heart disease.
