  • Argentina Climate

Buenos Aires and the Pampas are temperate; cool in the winter, hot and humid in the summer.

The deserts of Cuyo are extremely hot and dry in the summer and moderately cold and dry in the winter. Spring and fall often exhibit rapid temperature reversals; several days of extremely hot weather may be followed by several days of cold weather, then back to extremely hot.

The Andes are cool in the summer and very cold in the winter, varying according to altitude.

Patagonia is cool in the summer and cold in the winter. Extreme temperature shifts within a single day are even more common here; pack a variety of clothes and dress in layers.

Don't forget that seasons are reversed from those of the Northern Hemisphere.

  • Argentina Terrain

The central region of Argentina is mostly the rich plain known as the Pampa. There is jungle in the extreme northern areas, especially on the east. The southern half of Argentina is dominated by the flat to rolling plateau of Patagonia. The western border with Chile is along the rugged Andes mountains, including the Aconcagua, the highest mountain outside of the Himalayas. The western Cuyo regions at the base of the Andes are mostly rocky desert.

  • Abstract  Necrotising fasciitis is a rapidly progressive, polymicrobial synergistic soft tissue infection that spreads along fascial planes beneath seemingly normal skin. The relatively benign appearance of the extremity is misleading and often results in delay in diagnosis and increased morbidity or death. Involvement of bone is not a recognised feature. Successful management requires early detection, radical surgical debridement and broad spectrum intravenous antibiotics. We report an unusual case of necrotising fasciitis in a 61-year-old male who presented with musculoskeletal symptoms and gas within the femoral head as well as surrounding soft tissues. This resulted in necrosis of the femoral head with the development of chronic osteomyelitis, requiring long-term antibiotics and ultimately proximal femoral excision. We describe a previously unreported presentation of this condition with musculoskeletal involvement and discuss the potential pitfalls in delayed diagnosis. • Consultant Plastic Surgeon and international laser expert David Gault spoke out against the Department of Health's proposal to deregulate laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) devices for 'cosmetic' treatments. Mr Gault who helped develop the first hair-removing laser over 18 years ago and acts as an expert witness in medico-legal cases of 'botched' laser and IPL treatments is particularly concerned that these measures will lead to permanent complications in patients.
