Ear Surgery Procedure

The surgery called otoplasty and it is targeted to correct protruding or large outer ears. It is usually done in children ages 4-14. The ear reaches it`s final size around ages 4-6 and therefore it is better to perform the surgery at a younger age to avoid unnecessary suffering. Additional conditions which can be corrected are "lop ear" in which the upper ear is folded and leans forward, "cupped ear" in which the outer ears are unusually small and "shell ear" in which there is flattening of the folds resulting in a shell like ear. Long, short or torn ear lobes also can be fixed. This operation can repair congenital ear defects and make reconstruction of the outer ear after trauma.

The operation usually lasts between 1-3 hours; more complex procedures may last even longer. A cut is made behind the ear, making it invisible, to allow excess to ear cartilage. Then the surgeon will design the cartilage using cuts and sutures to get the desired shape. Sometimes non-absorbable stitches are used in order to create fold, those stitches will be under the skin and there is no need to remove them. A few surgeons prefer to make the cut in front of the ear and hide the scar behind the skin folds. In most of the cases the scar fades with time and is hardly seen. Both ears can be corrected in the same operation.

For younger children general anesthesia is preferred, for cooperative adults it can be done using local anesthetics and sedative drugs. Every operation has its risk. There is risk of blood clots under the scar area which usually absorb after few days; otherwise there is a need to drain then. There is a risk of infection involving the ear cartilage which can leave a scar. Those infection can be treated successfully with antibiotics in most of the cases and rarely require surgical drainage.

After the surgery a majority of the adults can return to their homes, young children usually left overnight for observation. The ears are bandaged with a bandage around the head to prevent bleeding and preserve the final shape. The ears will be swollen and painful for a couple of days. It is advised to avoid any activities that can harm the ears for about a month. Children should pay extra attention while playing. You shouldn`t sleep on the repaired ear for about 7-10 days

Planing on having ear surgery procedure in Papua New Guinea?
Here is some General Information about Papua New Guinea:

Papua New Guinea By boat

People living in PNG's archipelagos get around locally with the ubiquitous banana boat - a thirty or forty foot fiberglass hull with an outboard motor. In addition, two or three shipping lines also sell tickets for passengers who want to leapfrog from one city to another. Sleeping on the open deck of a ship as it crawls slowly through the South Pacific night is about as romantic as it sounds, but beware - it gets cold on the open ocean no matter where you are, so come with some warm clothes or buy a room indoor.

Does the person undergo a lot of pain during the Ear Surgery?
Like many face procedures, the ear surgery also has very minimal pain associated with it during the process. The doctors in Papua New Guinea(PG) say the patient may experience slight discomfort because the ears may experience some amount of pain during the first few days. However, when medication is taken regularly, this can be brought under control easily.

Papua New Guinea ear surgery - News update:
Two articles in the ‘Controversies in Cardiovascular Medicine’ series in Circulation discuss whether lowering LDL-cholesterol is an effective strategy to reduce cardiac risk. The first article challenges healthcare workers to consider the possibility that “the cholesterol-lowering programme has in large part failed to stem the epidemic of CHD and that the well-meaning focus on LDL-C reduction has deflected interest in other therapeutic aspects of lipoprotein treatment that provide equal or greater benefit.” The author reviews the knowledge acquired since 1996 and discusses the following topics. • Blood cholesterol lowering history • Relative risk reduction and professional/public confusion • Statistical significance does not necessarily mean clinical relevance • NNTs • The need to go beyond LDL-C reduction and incorporate aspects of reverse cholesterol transport • HDL-C–raising therapy • LDL-C–lowering only therapy vs. LDL-C–lowering plus HDL-C–raising therapy trials The second article outlines the rationale for lowering LDL-C to reduce morbidity and mortality from atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). The following topics are discussed: • LDL: the driving force of atherogenesis • Residual risk beyond LDL lowering • LDL lowering in secondary prevention • Primary prevention of ASCVD The author notes that the major challenge for the medical community is how best to achieve LDL lowering in the general population. He believes that “this will likely require a rethinking of the medical and public health models of prevention and new models almost certainly will include a broader use of inexpensive LDL-lowering drugs but with improved selection of individuals who are likely to benefit.” More...
