Ear Surgery Procedure

The surgery called otoplasty and it is targeted to correct protruding or large outer ears. It is usually done in children ages 4-14. The ear reaches it's final size around ages 4-6 and therefore it is better to perform the surgery at a younger age to avoid unnecessary suffering. Additional conditions which can be corrected are "lop ear" in which the upper ear is folded and leans forward, "cupped ear" in which the outer ears are unusually small and "shell ear" in which there is flattening of the folds resulting in a shell like ear. Long, short or torn ear lobes also can be fixed. This operation can repair congenital ear defects and make reconstruction of the outer ear after trauma.

The operation usually lasts between 1-3 hours; more complex procedures may last even longer. A cut is made behind the ear, making it invisible, to allow excess to ear cartilage. Then the surgeon will design the cartilage using cuts and sutures to get the desired shape. Sometimes non-absorbable stitches are used in order to create fold, those stitches will be under the skin and there is no need to remove them. A few surgeons prefer to make the cut in front of the ear and hide the scar behind the skin folds. In most of the cases the scar fades with time and is hardly seen. Both ears can be corrected in the same operation.

For younger children general anesthesia is preferred, for cooperative adults it can be done using local anesthetics and sedative drugs. Every operation has its risk. There is risk of blood clots under the scar area which usually absorb after few days; otherwise there is a need to drain then. There is a risk of infection involving the ear cartilage which can leave a scar. Those infection can be treated successfully with antibiotics in most of the cases and rarely require surgical drainage.

After the surgery a majority of the adults can return to their homes, young children usually left overnight for observation. The ears are bandaged with a bandage around the head to prevent bleeding and preserve the final shape. The ears will be swollen and painful for a couple of days. It is advised to avoid any activities that can harm the ears for about a month. Children should pay extra attention while playing. You shouldn't sleep on the repaired ear for about 7-10 days

  • Argentina Other destinations

According to the National Tourism Agency, the favourite places outside the important cities are

The awesome Iguaz? Falls, right in the north-east corner of the country.
The Nahuel Huapi National Park, in Patagonia in the foothills of the Andes mountains and its main city San Carlos de Bariloche
The beautiful Mar del Plata, world-wide called The Pearl of the Atlantic.
El Calafate, the main destination when visiting the Glaciers National Park and the advancing Perito Moreno Glacier.
The Perito Moreno Glacier, really a must when visiting Argentina.

Many ski centers operate in the Andes during the winter; Las Le?as and San Carlos de Bariloche are particularly well-known.

  • Argentina Electricity

Argentine electricity is officially 220V 50Hz, with slanted plugs similar to those used in Australia. Adapters and transformers for European and North American equipment are readily available.

The best way to use imported electrical equipment in Argentina is to purchase an adapter once there. These are available in the Florida shopping area in Buenos Aires for around US$2, or less in hardware stores outside the city center. Buildings use a mix of European and Australian plug fittings. However, the live and neutral pins in the Australian fittings are reversed so as to prevent cheap imports into Australia. Therefore an Australian adapter may be incompatible.

Many sockets have no earth pin. Laptop adapters should have little problem with this for short term use.

Argentina's outlets are their own standard, the IRAM-2073, which are physically identical to the Australian AS-3112 standard (two blades in a V-shape, with or without a third blade for ground).

Plastic Surgery News...

  • The authors of this case report discuss the case of a 45 year old woman who presented to hospital in February 2006 with diffuse abdominal pain. The patient had had an aortic valve replacement a few years earlier. She had developed constipation in 2005, for which she was taking a senna based laxative. For a few weeks before her admission she had been taking several tablets a day and had been passing loose, watery stools up to 3 times a day. She had also passed bloody stools. Since having her valve replacement, the patient had been on warfarin, which she took regularly and her INR was in therapeutic range. Blood test results found a haemoglobin level of only 84 g/L and her INR was 11.9 (INR was 2.3 twenty-five days before admission). A CT scan of the abdomen showed significant haematoma and the patient was admitted and given vitamin K, fresh frozen plasma, and packed red cells. The authors note that a lack of vitamin K in the body reduces coagulation, and in this patient’s case the diarrhoea had reduced absorption of vitamin K (even though the patient’s dietary intake of green vegetables had remained constant), and therefore increased the risk of bleeding. The authors say, “Although some physicians recommend halving the dose of warfarin when the patient has diarrhoea, many doctors seem unaware of the increased risk of bleeding - and many textbooks, formularies, and patient-information leaflets fail to mention the increased risk, or do so only in passing. Cases like ours will continue to occur, until doctors and patients are better informed.”

  • Middle-aged Australians are less active and more overweight than any other age group, a Queensland University of Technology researcher said. Associate Professor and Senior Research Fellow of QUT's Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation, Gavin Turrell, is embarking on a study to find out why baby boomers are less physically active.
