Air brush tanning is also known as DHA tanning since the main ingredient in the spray tan solution is dihydroxyacetone or DHA. This is a natural tanning body procedure, without getting exposed to the rays of sun, which could harm the skin sometimes, cause allergic side effects, and even result in cancer in certain persons. This safe cosmetic treatment would require a compressor for spraying the solution on the skin. You would also be required to buy an air brush, 10 feet of air hose, an air brush plastic bottle and about 2 liters of spray tan solution. A set of the about accessories would cost between $100 and $150. However, it would be much cheaper to get this cosmetic treatment done in beauty parlors or salons than to indulge in do-it-yourself procedures.

A typical air brush tannin solution would contain dihydroxyacetone, alcohol, dihydroxyethanol, green tea extract, phenoxyethanol, polyacrylamide, isoparafin, methyl paraben, and other such harmless chemicals. However, DHA tanning solution would be required to stay on the skin at least 6 hours for full effect. Hence, you should take bath only after 6 hours from the time of application of the spray tan of the air brush tanning solution. Applying a good moisturizer twice a day would extend the effect of DHA tanning.

The first tanning product was brought out by Coppertone in 1960, with the name of Quick Tanning Lotion or QT. The original product produced an orange hue. However, further technical advancements resulted in DHA tanning solutions that produce a nice and even golden hue on the skin. The American Academy of Dermatology had also recommended air brush tanning solutions that contain dihydroxyacetone or DHA as the main ingredient. Still, the spray tan solutions should also contain sunscreen ingredients. If you have any doubt about a particular DHA tanning solution, it would be advisable to consult a dermatologist about its ingredients, their actual efficacy and the possible risks.
