Calf Augmentation Procedure

This procedure offers a solution for those people that have underdeveloped calves or wish to augment them. The idea is to shape and size the calves by surgical insertion of implants. The implants are made of soft silicon and they come in different shapes and sizes. Before the operation your legs will be measured to select a proper implant for your needs. There is an alternative to implants. Calf augmentation can also be performed by liposuction of fat from other body parts and injecting it into the calves. This method is not suitable for people with no extra fat to be removed. Another problem is fat absorption that eventually occurs, sometimes creating not symmetric calves. Men and women can benefit from this procedure. Men usually want to increase the muscle bulk, giving them more masculine look and women wish to get more symmetrical appearance of their legs. This procedure also may help to correct some congenital defects, those include polio, spina bifida and clubfoot, all this conditions may be associated with undeveloped calves.

This procedure can be done with local or general anesthesia, and it usually lasts for an hour. During the operation the patient is laying on their back. A cut is made in the concavity behind the knee, then the skin is gently separated and a space is created. The implant is inserted above the muscles. After one leg is done the doctor performs the same on the other one. After the symmetry is confirmed the surgeon closes the cuts with stitches.

Every operation has its ricks. This one includes bleeding, infection and sometimes implants shrinkage and asymmetry.

After the surgery you may feel some degree of pain. Your doctor'll subscribe you for painkillers. At the first two days you'll be asked to raise your legs whenever you are sitting, this to reduce swelling. Afterwards, the bandages are removed and you are encouraged to walk more intensively to train your calve muscles. For about two weeks you'll fell like you're calves is been through excessive workout. Swelling and bruising also may appear, they are only temporary and will improve with time. You'll be able to go back to work after 7-10 days. You'll get detailed instructions from you're surgeon regarding the activities you should avoid, for example long walking, weight lifting and running. Usually, most of the patients are able to return to their daily activities after 4-6 weeks.

  • Thailand People

Thailand's people are largely Thais, although there are significant minorities of Chinese and assimilated Thai-Chinese throughout the country, Muslims in the south near the Malaysian border and hill tribes such as the Karen and the Hmong in the north of the country. The overwhelmingly dominant religion (95%) is Theraveda Buddhism, although Confucianism, Islam, Christianity and animist faiths also jostle for position.

  • Thailand History

A unified Thai kingdom was established in the mid-14th century. Known as Siam until 1939, Thailand is the only South-East Asian country never to have been taken over by a European power, and fiercely proud of the fact. A bloodless revolution in 1932 led to a constitutional monarchy. In alliance with Japan during World War II, Thailand became a US ally following the conflict. After a string of military dictatorships and quickly toppled civilian presidents, Thailand finally stabilized into a fair approximation of a democracy and the economy, hobbled by the 1997 Asian economic crisis, is booming once again. Above it all presides the King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), the world's longest-reigning monarch and a deeply loved and respected figure of near-mythic proportions.

In September 2006, a swift and bloodless military coup endorsed by the King overthrew the previous democratically elected but widely criticized government, promising elections in late 2007. Although martial law still applies and political gatherings are restricted, there has been no violence, no curfews are in effect, there is no longer any significant military presence in public places, and all services are functioning normally.

Plastic Surgery News...

  • A six-year study of Amazonian small farmers and their responses to climate change shows the farmers are vulnerable to natural catastrophes and risky land use practices, say Indiana University Bloomington anthropologists Eduardo Brondizio and Emilio Moran.

  • Objective  To present and interpret results of patch testing with the Mayo Clinic standard series over 5 years.

Design  Retrospective study. A standardized patch testing technique was used. Data were recorded on a standardized computer program from January 1, 2001, to December 31, 2005, and analyzed.

    Setting  Tertiary referral center.

Patients  Patients who were referred for patch testing.

Intervention  Patch testing with the "standard series," ie, a standard series of allergens used by most clinicians to identify the most common offending allergens in patients with allergic contact dermatitis.

Main Outcome Measures  Number of patients patch tested, allergens used over this period, and rates of allergic patch test reactions to allergens.

Results  A total of 3854 patients (mean age, 55.1 years; age range, 6.2-99.4 years; 2576 female [66.8%]) were tested. All dermatologists in the department performed patch testing. The mean number of allergens included was 69.3 (range, 6-87). There were 2664 patients with at least 1 positive reaction (69.1%) and 1933 with 2 or more positive reactions (50.2%). Metals, fragrances, topical antibiotics, preservatives, and individual allergens used in hair-care products, topical corticosteroids, glues, plastics, and rubber were still the most common allergen groups associated with allergic patch test reactions.

Conclusions  We describe the structure of the patch testing service at our referral center. Ongoing analysis of our patch test reaction rates allows us to recommend broad, clinically relevant, and up-to-date allergens for testing.
