  • Louisville By plane

Louisville International Airport (SDF) is not a hub and therefore has few direct flights — you'll probably stop, and possibly change planes, in either St. Louis or Chicago. The airport is "International" in name only — there are once a week flights from Montreal and to Toronto! Too bad you can't fly with UPS whose huge all-points international air hub is located in Louisville.

  • Louisville By bus

Louisville's public transit service, TARC, operates bus lines in all parts of Metro Louisville (Jefferson County). Fares are $1 with a possibility for two transfers in two hours. Tickets can be purchased at some banks and government offices but this will not really save you much money unless you are going to be staying in the city and getting around by bus for at least two weeks. Buses generally run from about six AM until ten PM, some later on weekends, but it is a good idea to check the schedule for each specific route. Timetables are only posted at major stops. The buses are also rather impractical in the suburbs, as they are infrequent and the stops are far apart.

  • For the first time, researchers at North Carolina State University have demonstrated that microscopic "two-faced" spheres whose halves are physically or chemically different - so-called Janus particles - will move like stealthy submarines when an alternating electrical field is applied to liquid surrounding the particles.A paper describing the research, published in the Feb.

  • According to Reuters, research from South India has questioned the role of the tuberculin skin test (TST) in detecting latent and active tuberculosis (TB) individuals who are HIV-positive. The research team analysed the findings of two clinical trials of treatment regimens for latent and active TB in HIV-positive patients. A total of 209 patients with active pulmonary TB and 631 patients who had suspected latent TB were administered one tuberculin unit of the formula as a part of the diagnostic workup for TB. Overall, less than half the patients with latent or active tuberculosis had a positive tuberculin test result; the rates of positivity to the test appeared to correlate with the CD4 count, with lower rates seen among those with a lower CD4 count. Using the conventional 5mm cut-off for tuberculin positivity, the sensitivity and positive predictive value for active tuberculosis were 51.2% and 28.5%, respectively. The authors conclude that TST is a poor predictor of both latent and active TB in HIV-infected individuals in TB endemic countries. {Editor’s note: This summary is taken from the Reuters Health abstract only].
