Breast Reconstruction Procedure
This procedure is designed for women who underwent breast amputation after breast cancer or other conditions. Newer techniques allow the surgeon to create a breast which is very similar to the natural one. The reconstruction can be done during the amputation procedure, or a few months or even a year afterwards.
There are a number of implants: the most widely used are silicon implants which have silicon surface and filling. They come in different sizes and shapes.
Becker implants are made of a thick silicon surface (35%-50%) and a solution filling. The advantage of this implant is the ability to adjust its shape to the woman's body. It can also serve as a skin stretcher. There are also implants with a thin silicon surface and a solution filling, which are less used.
The operation can be divided into 2 main categories: (a) a stretcher is inserted, then replaced with an implant; (b) the reconstruction is made from another body tissue.
The most common reconstruction is performed with a stretcher and an implant. After amputation a balloon (stretcher) is inserted under the skin and chest muscles. It has a special valve which can be filled from outside. The implant is being filled gradually with a special solution, until the skin has sufficiently stretched for inserting the implant. It takes another 3-6 months until the breast has acquired its final shape, then the nipple can be reconstructed as well.
Becker implants: sometimes during amputation the skin can be preserved. That would eliminate the need for a stretcher, and a permanent implant (Becker) can be inserted right away.
The breast can also be reconstructed with body tissue from areas with extra skin and fat, like the tummy, buttocks and back. The tissue being removed is called "a flap". Common sites to acquire the flap are the lower tummy and the lotissimus dorsi muscle from the back.
This procedure can be complicated due to implant infection, a contraction of a surface of an implant, silicon leaks and anesthetic complications.
You'll need to stay in hospital 2-7 days after the surgery, while you may feel pain and weakness for a week or two. Complete recovery may take up to 6 weeks, depending on the surgery. You may have an unusual sensation in the breast that would usually disappear over time. In most cases there could be a slight asymmetry between the breasts, however, most women report a significant improvement in their social life and self esteem.

Basel Dance, Rock and Jazz
Atlantis [49], +41 61 288 96 96, Klosterberg 13, city center near Heuwaage, is probably the most venerable venue for all kinds of popular music Basel has to offer. It's been around since the 50s and is, after many incarnations as a jazz club, theater, rock venue, now one of Basel's most popular dance clubs. A national and international set of DJs turns the tables nightly and finds an audience aged between 17 and 30. But the spirit of Rock is still alive, and the 'Tis also provides a stage for numerous local bands, with concerts taking place about five times a month.
Kaserne [50], +41 61 66 66 000, Klybeckstr. 1b, Kleinbasel, is a concert (Indie Rock, Electronic Music, Hip Hop, Drum'n'Bass), theater and dance venue. -

Plastic Surgery News...
- Comptroller General David Walker on Tuesday at a Senate Budget Committee hearing said that increased health care costs and an aging population have placed the federal budget on an "imprudent and unsustainable path" and that "passage of time only serves to worsen this situation," CongressDaily reports.
- The author of this article looks at how good design solutions could prevent the harm caused to many patients each year due to medical errors. Patient safety is now a focus in the NHS and the author notes, “In the United Kingdom and elsewhere there is new enthusiasm for invention, innovation, and redesign”. As an example, a current project involves the development of a new connector to prevent intravenous drugs being injected through the spinal route. The author refers to “innovation hubs” that people working in the NHS in England can approach if they have an idea or design to make health care safer. Innovation hubs are a collaboration between the Department of Health and the Department of Trade and Industry and there is one in each region of the country.
The author ends by quoting the Chief Medical Officer for England and Wales, who has said: “Design skills play a major part in safety in other sectors that healthcare has been slow to embrace. Seemingly simple applications, such as medicine packaging and labelling, have hardly been exploited while patients continue to be harmed from look-alike, sound-alike medication errors. Design experts should be part of every team that seeks to find an effective solution to a major source of risk in patient care. This should embrace both technological areas but also so called soft systems. The power of design has a potential to make health care of tomorrow safer than it is today. It should be used, and used with open mindedness and imagination."
