Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure usually designed to reconstruct the breast of patients who have had a mastectomy due to breast cancer. Depending upon the patient, there may be several different options for breast reconstruction involving breast implants as well as using the patient's own tissues. Not every patient will be a candidate for every reconstructive technique.

An incision is made along the previous scar and dissection is carried down through the tissues to the chest wall.

An implant is placed underneath the autologous tissue to increase the size of the reconstructed breast.

Depending on the reconstructive technique utilized, the healing time can be from four to eight weeks or longer. If the abdominal tissue is utilized, the healing process will be longer. If the muscle from the back is used, the healing time is usually shorter. Breast reconstruction is a complex procedure and results vary.
The patient is placed in a compression garment or bra. Compression garments are an important part of the recovery process. The garment provides support, comfort and helps to minimize swelling. The patient is usually wearing a bra or some type of supportive garment at all times, except when showering. Healing time is approximately three months. Scarring is variable and often depends on the patient's ability to heal.

Parking at most attractions is convenient, though on-street parking in downtown areas is sometimes at a premium. Passenger train service is run by Via Rail in Canada and the train station in Ottawa is less than ten minutes from downtown by car, taxi or bus. There are several trains daily leaving for Montreal, Toronto and points in between.
The train station is on a high frequency bus route (#95) and takes only 5 minutes to get you downtown.
Hikers wanting to go from the station to downtown by foot will be blocked by the 417 highway. But there is a way around. This path should not be taken alone or at dark and may be flooded after periods of intense rain or snow melting. Have a street map with you so you can locate yourself once you have reached Strathcona Park. The station to Strathcona Park takes about half an hour. Another half hour from the Park to downtown.

- According to a BioSpace report, the US Food and Drug Administration has approved palonosetron (Aloxi) injection for the treatment of post-operative nausea and vomiting for up to 24 hours following surgery.
According to the report, the new indication is based on the results of data from a phase III trial which investigated the safety and efficacy of palonosetron in 574 patients undergoing elective gynaecological or abdominal laparoscopic surgery. The most frequently observed side effects with palonosetron equal to or greater than 2% were electrocardiogram (ECG) QT prolongation (5%), bradycardia (4%), headache (3%), and constipation (2%).
