The approval is based on results from a four-week, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in paediatric patients that demonstrated efficacy with aripiprazole compared to placebo on the primary efficacy endpoint, mean change from baseline to Week 4 on the Young-Mania Rating Scale (Y-MRS) Total Score.

The reason being that the company needed to conduct additional clinical studies to address questions from the European Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use regarding the drug’s risk-benefit profile. The application for marketing authorisation in the EU for Pristiqs had been submitted in October 2007.
