- According to a report by PharmaLive, the US Food and Drug Administration has approved colesevelam hydrochloride (Welchol) for the improvement of glycaemic control in type II diabetics, either alone or in combination with metformin, sulfonylureas, or insulin.
The approval is based on data presented at the American Diabetes Association annual meeting which showed that colesevelam lowered both HbA1c and LDL-C levels.
According to the PharmaLive report, in clinical trials evaluating colesevelam for type II diabetes, the following adverse effects were seen more frequently in the colesevelam group: constipation, nasopharyngitis, dyspepsia, hypoglycaemia, nausea and hypertension.
