Brachioplasty (Arm Lift)

Loose upper arm skin is most often related to weight loss. People in overweight more than likely develop heavy upper arms. To accommodate the increased volume of the upper arms, your skin stretched. After weight loss, skin often fails to tighten, and so it sags. The only way to improve this problem is through an arm lift, also called brachioplasty.

Is Liposuction an Option?
Liposuction can be a better choice when a patient has a lot of fat and the skin is tight. If the problem is loose skin, then an arm lift is usually the best choice.

Incisions and Scars in Arm Lift
Scars are the greatest drawback of this operation. They will extend from the armpit to the elbow, along the inside of the arm. This operation exchanges one cosmetic problem (loose skin) for another (scars). In general, those with very loose saggy skin are most likely to find this exchange worthwhile. Those with a small amount of looseness will probably not want the scars.

Surgery: Anesthesia

Final result
Will be seen after the scars have matured, which will be about six months.

Tips and Traps of Arm Lift
Patient should realize that this operation involves the exchange of one cosmetic problem (loose skin) for another (scars). If a patient is unwilling to accept scars, they should avoid this operation. Surgeons can not predict how the scars will heal on a patient.

Arm lift is for loose skin. If your main problem is heavy arms due to excess fat, then liposuction may be a better option.

  • Canada Get in

Although the citizens of many countries are exempt (see below) you may need a Temporary Resident Visa to enter the country. If you plan to visit the United States and do not travel outside the borders of the US, you can use your single entry visa to re-enter as long as the visa has not passed its expiry date. Working while in the country is forbidden without a work permit, although Canada does have several temporary work permits for youth from specific countries. If you have a recent criminal conviction (within 5 years) you are inadmissible to Canada. This includes drinking, dangerous, and reckless driving convictions. If you have a conviction over 5 years old then you can apply for 'rehabilitation' approval in advance. The government of Canada maintains a quite informative website for non-Canadians wishing to travel to Canada: http://canadainternational.gc.ca

Plastic Surgery News...

  • This Blog provides a quick and succinct commentary on a recent Cochrane review of the efficacy and safety of aripiprazole vs. conventional (typical) antipsychotics for schizophrenia. The review had noted that aripiprazole and conventional antipsychotics had similar efficacy with regard to symptom improvement, but aripiprazole appeared to offer a favourable adverse-effect profile, with a lower risk of extra-pyramidal symptoms, hyperprolactinaemia, raised blood glucose and sinus tachycardia. The blog notes the following: • Most of the studies on which the review was based were short-term and data reporting was considered to be poor. • Although aripiprazole is suggested to offer a possible advantage over conventional antipsychotics regarding compliance, the drop out rate of patients receiving aripiprazole in one long-term study reported was still very high at 57%. • None of the studies in the review reported relapse, which is the outcome of most interest once an acute episode has been controlled. The blog concludes “further longer-term data, especially those comparing aripiprazole with other atypical antipsychotics, are required before it can be recommended for routine use ahead of other more established less expensive atypical antipsychotics; however, aripiprazole may be an option to consider where they are ineffective or not tolerated.”. It adds that the NICE guideline on prescribing and monitoring of antipsychotics should continue to be followed and GPs should consider referring patients where adherence to treatment is poor, or they suffer unacceptable side effects.
