It notes that unlike well-established symptomatic treatments for hay fever, Grazax has to be taken every day throughout the year. In addition, an analysis of published trial data found that Grazax modestly reduces symptom scores compared to placebo, an effect that was not considered clinically relevant. Furthermore, there have been no published studies comparing Grazax with symptomatic therapies or subcutaneous immunotherapy for hay fever. The authors conclude “Grazax is expensive and its long-term efficacy and safety are not known. On current evidence, we cannot recommend the use of Grazax.” More...

The treatment proved to be relatively safe. Precautions include: know allergy to botox or albumin, muscle weakness, use of aminoglicozide antibiotics, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Common side effects include: bleeding around the injection sites, headache, flu like symptoms and local pain. Another unwanted effect is paralysis of adjacent muscles which may cause eyelid drop (usually partial), double vision and difficulty swallowing. Because only part of those muscles was paralyzed there is usually a full compensation of the remaining muscle after 2-4 weeks.
