Abdominoplasty Procedure

This procedure is also called a Tummy Tuck. It is designed to remove extra fat and loose skin that tend to accumulate in the lower belly. Previous scars resulting from abdominal surgery or stretch marks after giving birth can also be treated this way. This operation can be useful for people after dramatic weight reduction, which can leave your skin loose, resembling an accordion. It is important to understand that this operation is not a substitute for diet and exercise. If there is also extra fat in the abdominal wall this operation can be combined with a liposuction, but it is advisable to wait 6 month between the two. This operation can also be preformed with breast augmentation; the implants can be inserted through the cut made in the abdomen, so additional surgery can be avoided.

During the surgery a longitudinal incision (20-30c"m long) in a shape of an arch is made just above the pubic hair. Through the incision the surgeon separates the skin and fat from the muscles, stitches them together in order to stretch the tummy and removes the extra fat and skin. The umbilicus is detached from the skin and returns to its new position after the stretch.

It is not wise to undergo the operation during the reproductive years because every delivery can loose your tummy and make it look fallen again.

After the surgery you'll have two scars, a longitudinal scar at the lower abdomen and a round scar around the belly button. The scars tend to fade away with time, but you should remember that the size and color of the scars couldn't be predicted.

The most common complication of the procedure is haematoma under the skin, which may need surgical drainage. Other complications such as infection and difficult healing are rare.

You will be discharged from the clinic one day after the surgery; you may fell pain in the scar area, which can be treated with painkillers, the bandages and a drainage tubes will be removed one day after the surgery. Most of the patients return to their daily activities after two weeks but exercise is not allowed for two month. During the surgery small nerves are injured, therefore you may fell numbness in your tummy, they usually recover after a couple of month. Swelling is normal during the initial period following the surgery. It takes about two month before the swelling completely disappears.

  • Concord See
Port Chicago Naval Magazine National Memorial, [2]. This memorial honors 320 individuals (including 200 young African American men) who were killed in a munitions accident during World War II while loading munitions and bombs onto ships bound for the Pacific Rim. Following the explosion many of the enlisted men refused to work, resulting in the Navy's largest mutiny trial and eventually helping to push the US Armed Forces to desegregate. Reservations are required to visit the memorial and can be made by calling (925) 838-0249. Tours are available Wednesday-Saturday from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM and take one hour. The memorial can be reached by exiting on the Port Chicago Highway exit from either highway 4 or highway 242, and heading north to the Concord Naval Weapons Station.

  • According to research published in Pediatrics, fluconazole prophylaxis for extremely low birth weight (ELBW) newborns can reduce the incidence of invasive candidiasis and related mortality in NICUs without causing fluconazole-resistant Candida species Researchers evaluated the impact of fluconazole prophylaxis for ELBW infants on invasive candidiasis incidence, invasive candidiasis-related mortality rates, and fluconazole susceptibility of Candida isolates. ELBW (401 to 1000 g) infants were eligible if they were younger than 5 days of age and did not have liver failure. Some non-ELBW infants were also given fluconazole if they were considered to be at risk for invasive candidiasis, and fluconazole was given intravenously at a dose of 3 mg/kg at various intervals for up to 6 weeks. NICU infants (all birth weights) with invasive candidiasis between April 2002 and March 2006 were compared with those with invasive candidiasis before fluconazole prophylaxis (2000-2001). The following results were reported for the target ELBW infants: • Invasive candidiasis incidence in NICU infants decreased from 0.6% (19 of 3012 infants) before fluconazole prophylaxis to 0.3% (22 of 6393 infants) in 2002-2006 (p=0.05) and that in extremely low birth weight infants decreased 3.6-fold (from 7.3% to 2%; P = 0 .003). • Invasive candidiasis-related mortality rate decreased from 2% to 0% (P =0.01), and the all-cause mortality rate decreased from 19% (54 of 3012 infants) to 15% P =0.13). • The invasive candidiasis species distribution remained stable. The researchers also conclude that this study demonstrates that fluconazole prophylaxis should be considered in NICUs caring for infants with BWs of less than 1000g or less than 750g, and infants who have significant ongoing risk factors, in a manner that limits total fluconazole exposure.

  • Commonwealth Care, Massachusetts' subsidized health insurance program, is expected to double in enrollment and cost by June 2011, which "would far outstrip the original plans" for the program "largely because state officials underestimated the number of uninsured residents," the Boston Globe reports.
