However differences between the two study groups with regard to baseline CV risk, compliance with therapy and length of follow-up, plus the lack of standard criteria for assessment of treatment outcomes, raise the possibility that the difference in treatment effect may have been overestimated. Given these limitations it would seem premature to alter existing statin policies at this time. However if these findings were replicated in a sufficiently powered randomised controlled trial then there would be a stronger case for review – from these data it would seem that it would only require a trial involving 5000 patients followed up for 18 months to make that case.
