Overall, 5 RCTs (n = 1328 children aged 6 months to 12 years) met the inclusion critieria. The researchers reported that there was no statistically significant overall effect of antibiotic therapy in preventing the development of asymptomatic MEE at 1 month (p = 0.19) and independent predictors of the development of asymptomatic MEE were age < 2 years and recurrent AOM.
