Laser Skin Resurfacing Procedure

This procedure is used to remove or to conceal various face defects. The treatment, also know as lasabration or laser peel, uses laser energy targeted at specific site to remove skin layer by layer by removing superficial skin cells.

The technique is suitable for gentle wrinkles around the eyes and the mouse and on the forehead. Acne scars and face-lift operation that left wrinkled skin also can be treated. It is not recommended for people with dark skin and those with active acne.

There are two types of lasers, the one uses CO2 and the one uses erbium. CO2 laser resurfacing is been used for years. It treats several skin defects such as scars, wrinkles, warts, overgrown oil glands on the nose (called rhinophima) and skin tumors. It uses very short light wave energy in a periodical matter targeted to specific location or a continuous beam which is scattered around the area. This insures that only minimal heat is applied to the skin creating minimal heat damage to the surrounding tissue. Healing time from this treatment is usually two weeks. Erbium laser resurfacing is used to remove superficial to slightly deeper skin lines on the face and neck. He`s causing even less heat damage then the previous technique. There is much less swelling and redness after the treatment and the recovery time is about a week. It is also more effective for people with dark skin.

Both of the techniques can be performed using local anesthetic combined with sedative drugs. Partial treatment last for 30-35 minutes, full-face treatment last for 1.5-2 hours. After the treatment a sterile bandage is applied to the area, which can be removed after 1-3 days. Complete healing usually takes place after 10-21 days. Once the area is healed make up can be used to hide the redness that usually appears.

Every procedure has its ricks and complications. This one includes pigmentation changes either to darker or brighter skin color. Small white spots may appear. Face swelling may persist several weeks. Infection and cold sore can also happen. It is recommended to stop smoking for better healing of the area.

The treated area may look and feel like sunburned for some time. You have to wear sunscreen to protect the resurfaced skin. You should choose the one which blocks UVA and UVB and has a sun-protecting factor of 15.

Planing on having laser skin resurfacing procedure in BS?
Here is some General Information about BS:

Where to Sleep in the Bahamas?
Accommodation on the Bahamas is expensive, and there is virtually no backpacker/hostel-type lodging. The cheapest hotels start at around US$70, and most hotels cost US$200-300/night, with the very best resorts easily pushing up above US$500. Deals may be available in the summer off-season though.

Most hotels and resorts in the Bahamas are located in New Providence (Nassau) and neighboring Paradise Island. The rest of the country remains rather off the beaten track for tourism, and eg. Eleuthera, despite being 100 miles long, has only three hotels.

How is laser skin resurfacing done?
This type of skin resurfacing procedure, performed at hospitals in BS(Bahamas), is done using carbon-dioxide lasers. In this procedure, the upper layers of the skin are removed through vaporization. The person that does this procedure should be well trained in using the laser equipment carefully in order to prevent burning of your skin.
BS laser skin resurfacing - News update:

Objective  To assess the clinical responsiveness of the CLASI (Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus [CLE] Disease Area and Severity Index).

Design  Validation cohort.

Setting  Tertiary referral center.

Patients  Eight patients with CLE.

Intervention  Assessment of patients with CLE from baseline until day 56 after starting a new standard of care therapy.

Main Outcome Measures  Correlation of the baseline to day-56 change in 2 CLASI scales (disease activity and damage), with baseline to day-56 change in the physicians' and patients' assessments of patient's global skin health scores, and the patients' assessments of pain and itch.

Results  The change in CLASI activity score highly correlated with the changes in 3 clinical validation measures: physicians' assessment of skin health (r = 0.97; P = .003; n = 7), patients' global skin health score (r = 0.85; P = .007; n = 8), and pain (r = 0.98; P = .004; n = 5). Using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, paired baseline to day-56 changes in CLASI activity and damage scores were analyzed for the 2 subgroups (meaningful change vs nonmeaningful change) composing each validation variable. Change in CLASI activity was significantly different for patients who had a meaningful change in their global skin self-ratings (Z = 1.07; P = .03) and approached statistical significance for patients who had a meaningful change in their level of itching (Z = 1.83; P = .06) and their physicians' global skin rating (Z = 1.84; P = .06). The CLASI activity score decreases after successful therapeutic intervention, whereas the damage score may increase in scarring forms of CLE.

Conclusion  The activity score of the CLASI correlates with the improvement of global skin health, pain, and itch and is thus a useful tool to measure clinical response.
