Hymenoplasty is one of the three major areas of cosmetic vaginal surgeries.

Hymenoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to repair or reconstruct the ring-like skin membrane partially covering the opening of the vagina (the “hymen”). Bleeding occurs when the hymen tears, which is typically the result of a woman’s first experience with intercourse. The Hymenoplasty surgery will pull the tissue back together to restore a “virgin-like” quality.

Quite rarely, a female can unknowingly tear her hymen by inserting a tampon. It may also happen during sports (e.g. - bicycles or horseback riding).

The biological function of the hymen is still uncertain, however, its social function is popularly regarded as a mythical symbol in many cultures. Therefore, qualified plastic surgeons perform Hymenoplasty at the request of women who need the surgery for ethnic, cultural, or religious reasons.

The Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) has recommended the addition of a new contraindication for rosiglitazone-containing medicines (Avandia®, Avandamet®, Avaglim®), stating that rosiglitazone must not be used in patients with an acute coronary syndrome, such as angina or some types of myocardial infarction. The CHMP also recommended the inclusion of a new warning stating that rosiglitazone is not recommended in patients with ischaemic heart disease and/or peripheral artery disease. The recommended changes to the product information have been made as a follow-up measure to the re-assessment of the benefits and risks of rosiglitazone and pioglitazone. This re-assessment was finalised by the CHMP in October 2007, concluding that the benefits of both medicines continued to outweigh their risks in their approved indications, but that the product information for rosiglitazone should be changed. The CHMP and its Efficacy Working Party are currently re-examining their existing ‘Note for guidance on clinical investigation of medicinal products in the treatment of diabetes mellitus’ to decide whether changes are needed.
