Eyelid tightening is conducted by plastic surgeons for reshaping the upper and lower eyelids, as well as for correcting drooping eyelids. Eyelid tightening is part of blepharoplasty cosmetic procedure. This delicate plastic surgery would reduce the drop in the eyelid but would not be able to eliminate wrinkles or crow’s feet. For complete enhancement of the appearance of the eyes and the face, eyelid tightening should be combined with other plastic surgery procedures.
Eyelid tightening is done with the help of a local anesthetic. The surgeon would make incisions along the natural creases in the upper eyelid and below the eyelash line in the lower eyelid. The fatty tissue would be separated from the skin and all excess fat would be removed. The surgeon might also trim some muscles before trimming the excess skin that is sagging. Finally, the incisions would be closed with appropriate sutures. The surgeon should tuck the Apo neurosis carefully to achieve symmetry in both eyelids.
After the surgery, the surgeon would closely monitor the patient until complete recovery is achieved. This would generally take about 3 to 6 weeks but could be longer in a few patients. Infection, dry eyes, and burning sensation are the most common risks in eyelid tightening. The moderate pain during the recovery period could be controlled by appropriate medications. The patient should avoid television viewing for a few days. Normal work and daily routine could be resumed after about 10 days, if there are no post-operative complications.
Any eyelid tightening or blepharoplasty should be done by the plastic surgeon only after tests are conducted by a qualified ophthalmologist. This procedure would help in detecting complications like glaucoma, etc. In such cases, eyelid tightening would be contra-indicated. In general, eyelid tightening cosmetic procedure is a quite safe plastic surgery method, with minimal risks that are present in any surgery.
