Canthoplasty in Taiwan (TW)  - What Is It?

Canthoplasty is a cosmetic procedure for reinforcing lower eyelid support. The lateral canthal tendon of the orbital bone is detached and a replacement is constructed. The aim of Canthoplasty is to strengthen the lateral canthus or the tissues that lie at the outer corner of eyelids and provide higher support to the lower eyelid. Sometimes, Canthoplasty might be done for reducing the surgical complications arising out of the incisions in the transcutaneous lower blepharoplasty.

There are international flights into Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (formerly called Chiang Kai-Shek (CKS) International Airport) in Taoyuan, and to a lesser extent, to the Kaohsiung International Airport. Taichung and Hualien airports also serve small numbers of international passengers. The Songshan domestic airport is located in Taipei.

Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (formerly Chiang-Kai Shek Airport) [3] (TPE) is Taiwan's main international airport. Located 40km to the southwest of Taipei, it has good connections to many major cities except those in mainland China. The airport has direct buses to Taipei, Taichung and other nearby cities. Alternatively, the U-Bus company operates shuttles to HSR Taoyuan (Jhongli) station for high-speed train connections, and to Jhongli Transit Station, for mainline TRA train and southbound bus connections to Tainan, Hsinchu etc.

Canthoplasty in Taiwan (TW) - How Is It Done?

The Canthoplasty plastic surgery is done with a local anesthetic injection. When the anesthetic takes effect, the surgeon would make a cut into the lateral canthus in the direction of the orbital bone rim. The surgeon would isolate the lateral canthal tendon that extends from the bone rim to the lower eyelid. The attachment of the tendon to the bone would be cut. After that, a small incision would be made on the margin of the eyelid very near the cut tendon. All the adherent skin and conjunctiva in the tarsal plate would be cleaned. The strip of the tarsal plate tissue would be used for creating a new, tighter tendon. Sutures would be done to sew this strip to the lining of the bone inside the bony rim of the socket. Finally dissolving sutures would close the overlying skin and muscle.

Canthoplasty in Taiwan (TW) - After the Surgery:

Swelling in the lower and upper eyelids might persist for a few weeks or months. The instructions of the surgeon should be strictly adhered to avoid post-surgical complications. Canthoplasty is a complicated and delicate cosmetic procedure and the plastic surgeon should be an expert and experienced one for best results. If the plastic surgery is not properly done, the eyes might get an unnatural upper slant or downward retraction, particularly in persons with prominent eyes or in persons with weak cheekbone or orbital rim support.

Taiwan canthoplasty - News update:
The Health Service Journal’s (HSJ) news reports that the Department of Health (DH) has become the first government department to be issued with a formal practice recommendation by the Information Commissioner after breaching the Freedom of Information (FoI) Act. Following an audit of complaints, the Information Commissioner's Office has told the DH to review the staffing and resource allocated to Freedom of Information requests. The HSJ news story notes that public authorities must conduct internal reviews within 20 working days, or 40 days in exceptional circumstances, but the Department took 90 days in one case and 80 days in two other cases. A press release from the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) notes: "The Department has repeatedly applied blanket exemptions to requested information with the effect, in some instances, of withholding entire documents from release. The Department has also been extending the timescale for consideration of the public interest test, exceeding the limits set out in ICO guidance." Failure to comply with a practice recommendation could result in an enforcement notice. In some cases, this could lead to an adverse comment in a report to Parliament by the commissioner. Further information on the story is available via the links above. More...
