For the most part the election went largely unnoticed by the world until several weeks before the October 31st election when Yushchenko fell violently ill after being poisoned with dioxin. Yushchenko has alleged that he was poisoned by someone at a dinner he had with Ukrainian government officials the day before he fell ill.
