The FDA is conducting a safety review of becaplermin (Regranex®) gel, a recombinant form of human platelet-derived growth factor which is used to treat diabetic foot and leg ulcers that are not healing. The agency has received information about a study that used a health insurance plan database of patients with diabetes aged at least 19 years, with no history of cancer, who were prescribed becaplermin, and compared with those not on this treatment. There was an increase in the number of patients who died as a result of cancer amongst those who received becaplermin three or more times. At this time, the agency believes that there may be some evidence for an increased risk of cancer death in patients who received repeated applications. As there are known risks associated with diabetic foot and leg ulcers that do not heal, the FDA recommends that while the review is ongoing, health care professionals should discuss the potential risks and benefits of using this treatment with their patients.
