Recently, concerns have arisen about reports of suicidal thoughts and behaviour reported in association with the use of varenicline, and these data have been subject to Europe-wide review. After the most recent consideration of available data, product information for doctors and patients is being updated to contain warnings that depression has been reported in patients using varenicline who are trying to stop smoking, and that symptoms of depression may include suicidal thoughts and behaviour. The MHRA urges continued reporting of any suspected adverse events related to varenicline via the Yellow Card system, and they give the following prescribing advice: • Smoking cessation, with or without pharmacotherapy, may be associated with an exacerbation of underlying psychiatric illness, including depression.
